Welcome to the Music Page of Varroa

This is primarily the page wherin I keep the important stuff for the music groups that I lead. The South End Ukulele Society is a ukulele (and other instruments!) jam band and song circle that meets on the Third Saturday of every month at the Kona Kai Coffee Company located at 124 4th Ave South, Kent, Washington. We try to start at 1:30 and continue until the last person quits and goes home.

If you or anyone you know is interested in playing with us, feel free to come on down. We play from my extensive collection of songs as projected onto a screen for all to see, plus whatever hand outs people are inclined to bring and share. I also encourage people to buy and bring the Daily Ukulele Song Books, just in case the projector isn't working!

We're open to all ages young and old, and most any skill level. We hope to see you there!

SEUS Mission Statements:

From the Wikipedia page about the recording session later known as "The Million Dollar Quartet:"

  • "... the sound of a group of friends, who are gathered together to play old favorites and share the pleasure of making music together."

  • If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right.

  • "You just pick a chord, go twang and you've got music." - Sid Vicious

  • "Play from the heart..." - Howie Aoyama
  • "Dooodly doodly doo!" - Carys "Harris" Jones

Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. It has 5 basic elements:

  • Pitch - The ordering of sounds on a frequency related scale
    • Melody - also tune, voice, or line - the musical phrase or motif
    • Harmony - simultaneous pitches, tones, or notes

  • Rhythm - A regular recurrence or pattern in time - sounds and silences
    • Tempo - The speed or pace of a given piece
    • Meter - the pattern of lines or accents, stressed or unstressed beats - Time signatures & bar lines
    • Articulation - the transition or continuity of notes

  • Dynamics - Volume of a sound or note, as well as an entire piece

  • Timbre (pronounced “tamber”) - That quality of a sound or tone that distinguishes the sound production. Also called tone quality and tone color

  • Texture - The way the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic characteristics are combined
